SMS Enhancements Available for Preview and Comment

Motor carriers can now preview the first package of changes to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s (FMCSA) Safety Measurement System (SMS). This preview allows you to see how the methodology changes will affect your SMS results before the changes go into effect. This update is the first in a series of improvements that will happen up to twice a year.

You can preview the changes by visiting the Compliance, Safety, Accountability (CSA) website and logging in with an FMCSA-issued U.S. DOT number and PIN, or by logging into the FMCSA Portal and selecting the “CSA Outreach” link. The preview runs through late June 2012.

FMCSA is also soliciting feedback from motor carriers during the preview to further improve the SMS enhancements before they are made public later in the summer. Written comments regarding the changes can be filed to the Federal Docket Management System at www.regulations.gov, docket ID number FMCSA-2012-0074.
